Water Storage Breach At Vedanta Alumina Unit In Odisha Impacts Farm Land

A water storage facility breach at miner Vedanta Aluminium's unit in Odisha has impacted agricultural land, the company said on Monday. The incident, which happened at Vedanta's Lanjigarh alumina refinery in Odisha on Sunday, has alarmed environment experts who pointed out it was a serious matter as the toxic byproduct 'red mud' was involved. The pumped water level, or PWL, has causticity in water, meaning it can corrode organic tissue by damaging skin, eyes and mucus membranes. The water overflowed due to heavy rain, Vedanta Aluminium said. Visuals of the industrial incident show process water lake downstream of a pond that appeared to have been formed by 'red mud'. A large volume of muddy red water was also seen flowing into open areas. The water covered the ground where some trees stood, and ran over other forms of vegetation. 'Red mud' is the waste generated in production of alumina from bauxite. It is also known as 'bauxite residue'.

"There will be serious consequences if you continue with this arrogant and obstinate attitude," the jailer has reportedly told the actor. Sources said that Darshan has been frequently arguing with the prison staff over facilities as the jailer informed him that they could only provide what is available within the prison and advised him to submit a petition to the court if he requires additional facilities. The jailer also reminded Darshan that the court is closely observing his behaviour in custody and his adherence to prison rules. Instead of cooperating with the prison authorities, Darshan has been violating disciplinary norms, the jailer reportedly told him. Darshan was also found making inappropriate gestures toward the media and his family when being brought for a family meeting. Additionally, he made demands for a television

Brazil Court Blocks Couple's Chosen Baby Name To Prevent Bullying In Future

A Brazilian court banned a couple from naming their newborn after an Egyptian king, citing the possibility that it could lead to bullying. Catarina and Danillo Primola wanted to give their newborn boy the name Piye-a historic figure who was the first black pharaoh of Egypt. Piye was an important figure, ruling Egypt for 30 years while helping establish the 25th dynasty. However, the court intervened stating a fear that the unusual name would expose him to ridicule and bullying during his lifetime. In coming to this judgment, the court clearly compromised its cultural objective of understanding the naming tradition for the potential social life the child was likely to face. "There was a word there that talked about the black pharaoh," Danillo Primola told Daily Mail. "We went to research what it was like and we found the story of Piie, who was a Nubian warrior who fought and conquered Egypt and became the first black pharaoh." They chose to name their son in hono

MS Dhoni is widely known as 'Captain Cool' for maintaining a calm demeanour even in adverse situations. This trait alongside his tactical acumen and self-belief has helped Dhoni become one of the greatest leaders of all time. Notably, Dhoni is the only captain in cricket history to win all three major ICC white-ball trophies - T20 World Cup (in 2007), Cricket World Cup (In 2011) and the Champions Trophy (in 2013). Not only this, Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to a record equalling five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles as well. Dhoni's former India and ex-CSK teammate Subramaniam Badrinath has revealed an unheard tale of the legendary player. The incident that Badrinath narrated had the rare instance of Dhoni losing his cool. "He is also a human...he has lost his cool," Badrinath told InsideSport . 'Influence Of Kohli...': Ponting's Blunt Warning Ahead Of Ind vs Aus Tests

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has lauded Virat Kohli for revolutionizing Test cricket in India. Ponting highlighted the significant impact Kohli had since taking over as Test captain, leading to a remarkable turnaround in the team's performance. Kohli's captaincy, which began at the end of 2014 and continued until early 2022, saw India flourish. He instilled an aggressive brand of cricket within the team, making them believe in their ability to win overseas. Under his leadership, India became the first Asian team to win a Test series on Australian soil. "Their fast-bowling depth is great. The leadership in the last 6-7 years has been strong. Going back to Kohli's start of captaincy, played a big role in turning the cricket around and Dravid has continued the same in the recent four years. The influence of someone like that [Kohli] around a team would be great and they've got star players," Ponting said while speaking to Sky Sports. During Kohli'

Man Sues Realtors After Finding Jeff Bezos Bought His Home For Less Price

A Brazilian businessman alleges a realtor deceived him into selling his Miami Beach mansion for $6 million lower than its true worth to Amazon Boss Jeff Bezos and is now suing him, according to a lawsuit reported reported by The Wall Street Journal. Leo Kryss, one of the founders of the Brazilian toy and electronics company Tectoy, claims the real estate company Douglas Elliman told him that a prospective buyer for his house in exclusive Indian Creek Village won't pay more than $79 million. Mr Kryss had listed the seven-bedroom, 11 1/2-bathroom mansion, covering 19,000 square feet, for $85 million.  Now Kryss is suing Elliman for the $6 million he believes he forfeited by not realizing Bezos was the buyer, according to people familiar with the matter, according to The WSJ. The lawsuit filed in July by Kryss said that he asked Douglas Elliman CEO Jay Parker if the interested buyer was the world's second richest man, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Parker allegedly let him know tha

Watch: S Jaishankar's G7 Googly When Questioned In Europe About BRICS

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, when asked about the need for BRICS when a grouping like G20 already existed, responded that if the G7 can exist when there is the G20, there is no reason why BRICS cannot. Mr Jaishankar said this during a conversation with Ambassador Jean-David Levitte at Geneva Centre for Security Policy, a think tank. BRICS was founded as an intergovernmental organisation by Brazil, Russia, India and China in 2009, with South Africa joining in later. In January this year, five new countries - Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE and Ethiopia - joined the bloc. "Why the club? Because there was another club. It was called the G7 and you will not let anybody else into that club. So, we go and form our own club," the foreign minister said. "I'm still struck by how insecure the (Global) North is when you speak about the BRICS. Somehow, something seems to get under people's skin," he said. "Here's an observation. There is a G20, d

Decades-Old Doorstop Turns Out To Be Priceless Gem Worth Rs 8 Crore

A large piece of amber used for years as a doorstop has just been valued at around $1 million (Rs 8.4 crore), according to EL PAIS . The 3.5-kilogramme stone was dug up by an elderly woman from a stream bed near Colti, Romania, and then used in her house to hold open doors. It was later discovered that the stone was one of the largest pieces of amber, which is the resin of a tree fossilised for millions of years. This type, known as rumanit because of its reddish hue, is mined around Colti. After she died in 1991, the house had been passed on to a relative who felt that the doorstop could be more valuable than originally thought. It was then sold to the Romanian state, and experts from the Museum of History in Krakow confirmed the amber to be between 38 and 70 million years old. The information has been confirmed to EL PAIS by Daniel Costache, director of the Provincial Museum of Buzau, where the object is currently being kept. "Its discovery represents a great significance b

Lotions, Sunscreens Linked To Hormonal Disruptions In Children, Study Finds

A recent study found a worrying correlation between the use of personal care products including lotions, hair oils, hair conditioners, ointments, and sunscreen, and higher levels of phthalates in young children, according to the new study by George Mason University College of Public Health. According to the study , depending on the children's racial and ethnic origin, different quantities of these chemicals-known for their endocrine-disrupting qualities-were identified. Phthalates are frequently utilised in plastics to improve their flexibility and durability; they are also found in a lot of personal hygiene products. Researchers are concerned about possible effects on children's development during important growth phases since these chemicals mimic, inhibit, or interact with the body's natural hormones. "This is the first study to suggest that different skin care products used by young children may differentially increase exposure to endocrine-disrupting phthalates

Frozen In Time: British Man's Body Cryopreserved In Hope of Future Revival

In a groundbreaking move, a 50-year-old British cancer patient's body was flown 3,750 miles and cryopreserved at a Michigan facility, sparking hopes of a future revival. The patient, who had opted for a cryonics scheme, was packed in dry ice at a London funeral home before embarking on the journey to the Cryonics Institute (CI), Metro reported. According to a case report from CI, the patient had been under hospital care at the time of his death. Notably, the cancer patient's body underwent a meticulous cryopreservation process, replacing blood and water with a specialised cryo-protection mixture to prevent ice formation and facilitate long-term preservation. After his death on February 29, his body was transported in dry ice to the Cryonics Institute (CI) in Michigan, where it was placed in a cryostat and frozen in liquid nitrogen at -196C. The CI is now home to over 250 patients, including pets and human heads, all suspended in a state of sub-zero limbo.  CI president Denn

Steve Smith Says Virat Kohli Is Australian. Explains Why

Veteran batter Steve Smith described Virat Kohli's approach on the field in a unique way, saying the Indian batting stalwart is Australian in his thoughts and action. India and Australia will renew their intense rivalry at the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which will see the two nations squaring off in the all-important five-match series at Perth, Adelaide (pink-ball game), Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney, respectively. India have won the last two editions of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy held in Australia in 2018/19 and 2020/21 respectively. "I believe Virat Kohli is Australian in thoughts and action. The way he gets into a battle, the way he gets into the challenge and tries to get on top of the opposition. He's probably the most Australian of the Indian players, I'd say," Smith said in a video posted by Star Sports on 'X', formerly Twitter. Kohli, who has 80 international centuries, including 29 Test tons, has scored 8,846 runs across 113 Tests with a 4

India Test Squad: BCCI's Vice-Captaincy Decision Baffles Everyone

Amid the chatter around Jasprit Bumrah being potentially rested for the 2-match Test series against Bangladesh, the marquee pacer surprisingly found a place in the squad for the first Test. Wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant also marked his return to the Test side after nearly 20 months out as India announced their 16-man squad for the series opener on Sunday. While some big names returned to the squad, some prominent names missed out too. However, another decision from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee that raised eyebrows was the absence of a designated vice-captain.  When India took on England in their last Test assignment, Jasprit Bumrah was named the vice-captain. However, no such role was allotted by the selection committee this time, making fans wonder what changed.  Bumrah is seen as one of the leaders in the team, alongside the likes of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Virat Kohli. While Kohli doesn't want to be officially given a leadership

Three of the bodies have now been confirmed as Kuki insurgents from Churachandpur district; the fourth has been identified as a Kuki volunteer from Jiribam; the fifth has been identified as a member of the Meitei insurgent group United National Liberation Front (Pambei), or UNLF(P), the police said in a statement on Sunday. The three Kuki insurgents were members of the Kuki Liberation Army (KLA), the police said, adding they suspect the three Kuki insurgents may have come from the hill district Churachandpur in southern Manipur, 230 km from Jiribam. Navdeep's Silver Upgraded To Gold In Men's Javelin F41 At Paralympics 2024

India's Navdeep Singh's silver medal was upgraded to gold after Iran's Beit Sayah Sadegh was disqualified following a dramatic men's javelin throw F41 final at the Paris Paralympics on Saturday. This is India's first-ever gold medal in the men's javelin F41 category. Starting the competition with a foul, the 23-year-old para-athlete from Haryana, who had finished fourth at the Tokyo Games three years ago, came up with a throw of 46.39 metres in his second attempt, propelling him to the second place. But it was his third throw that electrified the stadium. With a monstrous throw of 47.32 metres, Navdeep shattered the Paralympic record and surged into lead, only for Sadegh to better the Indian's mark and clinch the gold with a record-breaking effort of 47.64 metres in his fifth attempt. However, the Iranian was disqualified some time after the end of the final, leading to the Indian athlete taking the top spot. The F41 category is for athletes, who are of s

Is Covid Going Around Again? New Variant May Lead To Severe Surge: Report

As it spreads quickly throughout Europe, a recently discovered Covid-19 subvariant called XEC is drawing the attention of health authorities globally. XEC was first discovered in Germany, but reports of it have since spread to the Netherlands and other parts of Western Europe. Physicians and scientists are keeping a close eye on XEC, as it appears that it may eventually overtake the current dominant subvariant, KP.3.1.1. Right now in the US, this subvariant is the most common strain. According to a California-based physician speaking to the Los Angeles Times , XEC is "just getting started" and may take several weeks to months before it begins to significantly impact global and domestic case numbers. While XEC is "definitely taking charge" and appears to be the next prominent variant, experts caution that it will likely be months before it reaches high levels of prevalence. The first information report filed by a resident in the state capital Imphal against Ginza Vualzong, the spokesperson of the Churachandpur-based Kuki group Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF), alleged Mr Vualzong on April 23, 2023 announced his plan to start a "war against the State". "... His instigations and provocations have culminated into the large scale violence which immediately erupted on May 3, 2023 by the violent rioters who started burning forest offices/beats since April 28, 2023 and Meitei villages since the early hours on May 3, 2023," the FIR stated. The MUDA scam that had been occupying headlines in Karnataka has been pushed aside by a new scam - alleged misappropriation of funds to the tune of crores meant to fight Covid during the BJP rule in the state led by then Chief Minister BS Yeddiyurappa - raising allegations of tit-for-tat scams. A preliminary report on the matter by Justice John Michael  D'Cunha was discussed by the cabinet today, which apparently mentioned many other irregularities. Of these, sources said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah made three crucial observations at the meeting.  He said the judge has made very serious observations about hundreds of crores of rupees being misappropriated. The report has also said that there are many files missing that weren't placed before him despite his repeated requests, sources said.   The overall spending during Covid in the state was to the tune of Rs 13,000 crore. Mumbai College Which Rejected Gautam Adani Now Calls Him To Address Students

Gautam Adani had, in the late 1970s, applied to study at a Mumbai college but his application was rejected. He did not pursue education but turned to business and went on to build a $220-billion empire. About four-and-a-half decades later, he got called to the same college to deliver an address to students on Teachers' Day. Mr Adani had moved to Mumbai at the age of 16 and started working as a diamond sorter. Around the same time - in 1977 or 1978 - he applied for admission to the city's Jai Hind College. "But they rejected him," said Vikram Nankani, President of the Jai Hind College Alumni Association, as he introduced the Adani Group Chairman before the address. Mr Adani had applied to Jai Hind College because his elder brother, Vinod, had earlier studied there. "Fortunately or unfortunately, the college did not accept him and he went on to work full time and pursued an alternative career," Mr Nankani said, declaring Gautam Adani as a "deemed alumn

'Best Teacher Award' To Karnataka Principal Withheld Over "Anti-Hijab" Stand

The Karnataka government has withheld its decision to give the best teacher award to a principal of a government college over his alleged anti-hijab stand during the headscarf row in the state two years ago, sources in the Education Department said on Thursday. Ramakrishna BG, principal of Government Pre-University College at Kundapura in Udupi district, was supposed to receive the honour on Teachers' Day, but the decision was kept on hold after the Congress government drew criticism from some activists of the Muslim community, the sources said. "The reason behind the anger against the teacher is his alleged stand during the hijab row," a department official said. "The government had earlier announced his name but now it has been withheld," a source said. Ramakrishna was not available for comment. Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa clarified that the award is only withheld and not cancelled. "There was a government orde

Oceanographers Discover Undersea Mountain Taller Than Mount Olympus

Imagine stacking four skyscrapers the height of Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, on top of each other. That's almost the height of an underwater mountain recently discovered and mapped by oceanographers from the Schmidt Ocean Institute in California, the New York Post reported. This massive seamount, located in the Pacific Ocean about 1,448 kilometres off the coast of Chile, rises 3,109 meters from the ocean floor. It's part of an underwater mountain range teeming with life, including sponge gardens, ancient corals, and rare marine species such as a previously unfilmed species of squid. The discovery was made during a 28-day expedition led by the Schmidt Ocean Institute aboard the research vessel R/V Falkor (too). The team used a sonar system beneath the ship's hull to map the mountain in detail. "Sound waves travel down, bounce off the surface, and return. By measuring the time it takes for the sound to return, we can create a detailed map of the

Saturn's Rings To 'Disappear' In 2025. Will They Return? Read About It

Saturn, the sixth planet from the Sun in our Solar system, is celebrated for its breathtaking ring system, a marvel of celestial wonder. Comprising billions of icy particles and small rock fragments, these iconic rings have captivated astronomers and space enthusiasts for centuries, inspiring awe and fascination with their sheer scale and beauty. However, these rings will seemingly disappear from view in 2025. According to Earth.com , Saturn won't actually lose its rings in 2025, but they will become invisible to us.  Why Won't Saturn's Rings Be Visible? It all has to do with planetary alignment. The phenomenon happens because the planet rotates on an axis tilted by 26.7 degrees, and the view of its rings from Earth changes with time. As the planet's axis tilts in its unique way, the rings will slenderly align, edge-on to our viewpoint, hiding them from our sight.  To understand it better, think of Saturn's rings like a sheet of paper that is viewed edge-on from

Wearing Garland Of "Ignored" Complaints, Man Rolls Into Collector's Office

His complaints against corruption allegedly ignored for years, a man from Madhya Pradesh assembled a garland out of the documents and made an entrance into a district collector's office that left everyone stunned. Crawling on the road and then rolling on it, the man dragged several other documents containing what he claimed was "evidence" behind him, finally getting the attention that he was so desperately seeking.  Like every Tuesday, a public hearing was being conducted in the office of the Neemuch district collector to address people's grievances when Mukesh Prajapati was spotted crawling on his elbows - a garland of documents around him and several others sewn together on a rope trailing him. As he switched to rolling on the road and made his way to the entrance, it emerged that Mr Prajapat had been complaining against the alleged corrupt acts carried out by the sarpanch of his village, Kankariya, and claimed he had not been heard for over six years.  His shirt

"You're Talking About Jealousy": Ashwin's Big Take On Partnering Jadeja

Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have already established themselves as two of the most significant spinners for the Indian cricket team in the past couple of decades. Their partnership has been significant for India on multiple occasions and both of them feature in the Top 10 list of the highest wicket-takers for the national side. While both generally bowl at tandem in home conditions, Jadeja is mostly picked over Ashwin when it comes to overseas Tests. In a recent interview, Ashwin was asked about how he deals with that and he replied - “You are talking about Jealousy". Ashwin went on to heap major praise on Jadeja as he called him the "most talented cricketer" he has seen. “Jadeja is the most talented cricketer I've seen; everything about him is natural. Over the years, our relationship has improved as we've learned to understand each other's differences. I tend to think a lot, whereas he does not. Understanding took time, but now we have a str

Russia's "Invincible" Nuclear-Powered Nuke Launch Site Detected: Report

Two U.S. researchers say they have identified the probable deployment site in Russia of the 9M370 Burevestnik, a new nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed cruise missile touted by President Vladimir Putin as "invincible." Putin has said the weapon - dubbed the SSC-X-9 Skyfall by NATO - has an almost unlimited range and can evade U.S. missile defences. But some Western experts dispute his claims and the Burevestnik's strategic value, saying it will not add capabilities that Moscow does not already have and risks a radiation-spewing mishap. Using images taken on July 26 by Planet Labs, a commercial satellite firm, the two researchers identified a construction project abutting a nuclear warhead storage facility known by two names - Vologda-20 and Chebsara - as the new missile's potential deployment site. The facility is 295 miles (475 km) north of Moscow. Reuters is the first to report this development. Decker Eveleth, an analyst with the CNA research and analysis organizat
