Boy Dies After Father Ignores Snake Bite, Tells Him To 'Sleep It Off'

An 11-year-old boy bitten by a snake in Australia died after his father told him to "sleep it off" instead of reacting quickly and providing him with medical attention. In an inquest document released last week, coroner Ainslie Kirkegaard said Tristian Jaemes Frahm died from extensive internal bleeding due to brown snake envenomation. Tristian was found dead at a property in Murgon, a rural town in Queensland, approximately 257 kilometres from Brisbane, on November 21, 2021. The snake bit Tristian after he fell off a riding mower, according to a report in USA Today. "Tristian's death may have been prevented had he received early medical attention," the coroner's 22-page report stated. "The circumstances in which he passed demonstrate the importance of taking even the possibility of snakebite seriously." Tristan's father, Kerrod Frahm, alongside two other unnamed adults, received information that the 11-year-old may have been bitten by the s...

Mohammad Rizwan Sacked As Pakistan ODI Captain, Replacement Named

Another round of musical chairs in Pakistan's cricketing leadership completed on Monday as the cricket board announced the sacking of Mohammad Rizwan as the team's ODI captain. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) named fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new skipper in the format, replacing the wicket-keeper batter Rizwan who had only took up the leadership role in the 50-over format last October. Surprisingly, Shaheen will now be leading the team for next month's three-match ODI series against South Africa, marking a third change in the format's captaincy in the past 12 months. The 25-year-old replaced Mohammad Rizwan who took over as ODI skipper last October following Babar Azam's resignation. Under Rizwan's leadership, Pakistan didn't perform well in the Champions Trophy this year, finishing bottom in Group A, behind India, New Zealand and Bangladesh. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said Shaheen's appointment came after a meeting in Islamabad. ...

"Baffled": Gill Questioned Over India Pacer's Role Against Aus In 1st ODI

Shubman Gill endured a difficult first experience as captain of India in ODIs, losing his first game against Australia on Sunday. India were comprehensively outclassed by Australia in a rain-affected match, as the hosts chased down a target of 131 with 4.5 overs to spare in a 26-over contest. Following the match, Gill's tactics have come under fire from experts. Former India opener and reputed commentator Aakash Chopra has questioned Gill's bowling changes, and, in particular, Gill's usage of left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh. Upon taking the new ball, Arshdeep had impressed in his opening spell, picking up the wicket of maverick Australian opener Travis Head with just his second delivery. However, Arshdeep was taken off the attack after just two overs instead of being given a more prolonged go at the Australian batting. Arshdeep was reintroduced again in the 17th over, by which point the match had firmly slipped out of India's hands. "Arshdeep Singh bowled only ...

'Explore All Options': Harvard Professor On Indians Wanting To Study In US

Urging India to invest more in science, Tarun Khanna, the Jorge Paulo Lemann professor at the Harvard Business School, has said no country has escaped middle-income status without doing so. In an insightful presentation followed by an interaction at the NDTV World Summit 2025 on Saturday, the professor also spoke about the need for students from India to look at all options, given the uncertainty in the US, the urgency for the world to act on climate change and what India needs to do to become a superpower.  Asked why India has not been able to showcase public investment in science, Khanna said the problem is not restricted to the country. "I think most developing countries - we are currently what is called a low middle-income country... I would like us all to internalise that no country has escaped middle-income status without investing in science ever. It has not happened, so we have to do it," he said. Citing an example of an interaction with CEOs in which only one sai...

Bihar Poll Candidate Leaves To File Nomination, Drops Out At Father's Order

Upset over not getting a BJP ticket for Bihar's Bhagalpur, Arjit Shashwat Choubey, son of former Union Minister Ashwini Choubey, was about to file nomination as an Independent candidate. But a phone call changed everything.  The call came as the candidate has reached the premises of the district collectorate, heavily garlanded and cheered on by supporters. Then the phone rang. He took the call in front of reporters who waited to speak to him. After short, monosyllabic replies, the candidate turned back, without filing the papers.  Late, Choubey Junior explained the unexpected U-turn.  He said it was his father, Ashwini Choubey, who had called and issued very clear instructions. "You are in the BJP and will remain in the BJP," he quoted the former minister as saying. The 43-year-old then decided to withdraw from the electoral fray, respecting his father's wishes. Choubey said he has been under constant pressure from the BJP's top leadership since announcing hi...

Hope War Will End Without Ukraine Needing Tomahawks: Trump During Meet With Zelensky

US President Donald Trump suggested Friday it would be premature to give Ukraine Tomahawk missiles, saying as he hosted Volodymyr Zelensky that he hoped to secure peace with Russia first. "Hopefully they won't need it. Hopefully we'll be able to get the war over with without thinking about Tomahawks," Trump told reporters as he said opposite Zelensky in the Cabinet Room of the White House. Trump shook hands with Zelensky, who was wearing a dark suit and shirt, outside the West Wing and briefly raised a fist but neither leader answered shouted questions. The meeting comes a day after Trump announced a fresh summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin -- and cast doubt on giving Kyiv the powerful cruise missiles. Ukraine has been lobbying Washington for Tomahawks for weeks, arguing that they could help put pressure on Russia to end its brutal three-and-a-half year invasion. But on the eve of Zelensky's visit, Putin warned Trump in a call against delivering the...

Shilpa Shetty Withdraws Travel Plea Amid Rs 60-Crore Fraud Probe

Actor Shilpa Shetty has formally withdrawn her interim petition seeking permission to travel abroad amid a Rs 60-crore fraud probe involving her and husband Raj Kundra, the Bombay High Court was informed on Thursday. The move comes after the court signalled strong reservations about granting the couple permission. Advocate Niranjan Mundargi, appearing for Shetty, told a bench of Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad that the foreign trip - to the US for a "professional commitment," reportedly linked to an international video collaboration - "did not materialise," and that she was not pressing the current travel request. He was allowed to file a fresh application if the couple wished to travel in the future.  The main writ petition challenging the Look Out Circular (LOC) issued against Shetty and Kundra has been listed for further hearing on November 17. During the hearing, complainant's counsel Yusuf Iqbal objected to an affidavit dated...

"Great Progress": After Call, Trump Says He Will Meet Putin In Budapest

President Donald Trump said Thursday he will meet again with Russia's Vladimir Putin in an effort to end the war in Ukraine. A date has not been set, but Trump wrote on social media that the meeting would take place in Budapest, Hungary. "I believe great progress was made with today's telephone conversation," Trump wrote after talking to Putin. They previously met in Alaska in August, which did not produce a diplomatic breakthrough. Before Trump and Putin meet, US officials led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio will sit down with Russian representatives next week. It's unclear where that meeting will take place. The call came ahead of Trump's meeting on Friday at the White House with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has been pressing Trump to sell Kyiv Tomahawk missiles that would allow Ukrainian forces to strike deeper into Russian territory. Zelensky has argued that such strikes would help compel Putin to take Trump's calls for direct negot...

Kohli Recalls Dhoni, Kirsten's Words Amid ODI Future Speculation

Will the ODI series against Australia be Virat Kohli 's last? The talismanic batter has already quit the Test and T20I format, and speculations are rife about his potential retirement from the 50-over format after the ODI series against Australia. With India preparing to assemble the right team for the ODI World Cup 2027, Kohli's lack of match practice in the lead-up to the marquee event has been cited as a potential problem when it comes to his selection in the format. In these unpredictable times, Virat recalled what former captain MS Dhoni and head coach Gary Kirsten told him ahead of the ODI World Cup 2011. In a video shared by RCB on social media, Kohli revealed that he was backed by Dhoni and Kirsten, not because he was the most prolific or technically sound player, but for what he brought on the field. "Gary and MS made it very clear to me that we are backing you to play at number three. And this is what you can do for the team. What you represent on the field, ...

Amid Tension In Gwalior, A Cop-Lawyer Face-Off With "Jai Shri Ram" Slogans

"Jai Shri Ram, Jai Shri Ram" -- the chant rang out loud in the heart of Gwalior this evening, as a heated confrontation unfolded between a police officer and a lawyer amid prohibitory orders and tightened security across the city. What started as a dispute over enforcing prohibitory orders, quickly turned into a dramatic face-off between senior police officer Hina Khan and advocate Anil Mishra. Both sides chanted of "Jai Shri Ram" before a stunned crowd. The atmosphere in Gwalior has been tense over the installation of a statue of BR Ambedkar at the Madhya Pradesh High Court premises. Though the Dalits have called off their protest march planned for October 15, a security blanket has been firmly spread over the city in view of earlier instances of caste conflict. According to eyewitnesses, advocate Mishra, former president of the lawyers' association, arrived with his supporters to recite Ramayan's Sundar Kand near Phoolbagh on Monday evening.  Hina Khan ...

Arshad Nadeem's Coach Banned For Life By Pakistan's Athletics Federation

Salman Iqbal, the long serving coach of Pakistan's top athlete Arshad Nadeem, was on Sunday banned for life by the country's Athletics Federation for violating the constitution of the Punjab Athletics Association, where he holds the position of President. Under the life ban, Iqbal cannot take part in any athletics activities nor coach or hold office at any level. The violations the Pakistan Amateur Athletics Federation (PAAF) has accused Iqbal of committing by holding elections of the Punjab body occured back in August. An inquiry committee was formed in mid-September and it recommended the ban on Iqbal on October 10, a day after his reply to the PSB came out. The decision appears to be linked to the recent crisp reply Iqbal had sent to the state-run Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) when they asked him to explain Nadeem's poor show in the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo. PSB also demanded to know details about the expenses incurred on the javelin thrower's training a...

Bihar Man Wanted To Marry Girlfriend, So He Set Second Wife Ablaze

A man in Bihar wanted to marry his girlfriend, but his second wife objected. Angered by this, he doused her in petrol, released LPG from a cylinder, and set her ablaze, officials said on Saturday. Vikas Kumar, from a village in Nalanda district, had married Sunita Devi (25) five years ago. Sunita's father said it was only after the wedding that they realised Kumar had already been married once and had not divorced his first wife.  Kumar's family managed to convince Sunita to live with them, and she had two children, both of whom died shortly after they were born. Kumar then began talking about marrying his girlfriend and this led to frequent arguments between him and Sunita, who then left to live with her parents. Before the Durga Puja festival, which began last month, Kumar went to Sunita's house and asked her to return with him. Sunita's brother said they received a call from her around 1 am on Saturday, saying Kumar had thrown petrol on her and locked her in the ...

Afghan Minister Sparks Outrage With 'Ban' On Women Journalists At Press Meet

A press conference by Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi has caused outrage because no women were allowed to attend the event.  Muttaqi is a part of the Taliban government in Afghanistan and the group is known for the restrictions it imposes on women, essentially barring them from working. The Taliban's human rights record and the possibility of terror groups getting a safe haven in Afghanistan have been some of the factors which have made India cautious in its engagement with the group.  Muttaqi, who arrived in India on Thursday, held talks with Jaishankar on Friday. The meeting, seen as a big reset of ties, saw India announcing that the technical mission in Kabul would be upgraded to an embassy, which was welcomed by the Afghanistan foreign minister. "India is fully committed to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of Afghanistan. I am pleased to announce the upgrading of India's Technical Mission to the status of emb...

"Attackers Said They Were Didi's Men": BJP MP On Assault By Mob In Bengal

Khagen Murmu, the BJP MP attacked allegedly by Trinamool Congress goons, has vehemently refuted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's assertion that the locals at the flood-hit Jalpaiguri area where he had gone two days ago to distribute aid, had attacked him. Murmu and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh were set upon by a group of men, who, he said, were brought from other places, including Delhi, to block the entry of the BJP leaders.  Videos of the attack on the two leaders and images of a profusely bleeding Murmu have been widely circulated on social media. Describing the attack as a "law and order situation," Mamata Banerjee had said, "I don't want to politicise it. But if you take 30-40 cars inside a village that has lost everything, what can you expect?" Lying on his hospital bed, Murmu questioned how big a convoy can four MPs and a similar number of MLAs take. "How many cars were there? There was one MP or one MLA in each car, along with a few people from our d...
